Ships Clock Ships Clock

The first ships clock where referred to as a chronometer. They were use in navigation and where highly accurate.

The chronometers eventually evolved into ships bell clocks, which strike bells on the hour and half hour for the changing of the watch.

Basically, this instrument invented in England during the 1800’s is used to help plot the longitude of a ship’s position at any given time. It was designed to be imperious to the roll and motion of a ship and was constructed to perform without regard to changes in humidity or temperature. They are constructed to withstand rough handling and to even function when turned upside down. It can perform in this manner since it is driven by a coil spring rather than a pendulum. They are valued in the home for those that demand extreme accuracy.
