Alarm Clock Alarm Clock

History tells us that the first alarm clock was used in Germany in the early 1600’s. Basically it contained a notched cam that rotated every twelve hours. At the appropriate time a lever would fall into the notch that put into motion a number of gears that in turn actuated a hammer and caused it to strike a bell repeatedly until turned off.

The alarm clock made its appearance in America in the 18th century. In all likelihood the clock was introduced by English clockmakers. Alarm clocks since this time have always been subject to improvement and are a part of our American heritage today.
